Karimnagar: The good news is finally here. After decades of ignorance, the district headquarters hospital that caters to the healthcare needs of more than 1,000 outpatients, besides housing around 300 inpatients, will soon get additional facilities and equipment on par with the corporate entities with an outlay of Rs 2.71 crore.

The 48-bedded district hospital, which was started in 1957, was upgraded thrice. Since the hospital was upgraded to 350-bedded in 1983, there was no development till now due to successive government’s lackadaisical approach despite the fact that many a patient from erstwhile Adilabad district and Maharashtra, especially from Sironcha, were hugely dependent on this hospital.

The 150-bedded maternity ward that started some three years ago is still under construction, while the present ward building is in a state of ruins and urgently needs a new one.

The hospital is not only facing the problem of inadequate infrastructure but also the shortage of doctors. According to sources, currently the number of doctors in the hospital is 24 including three civil surgeons.

It may be noted here that as per the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS), a 250-bedded hospital should have at least 10 civil surgeons.

It is learnt that there is no recruitment for the hospital for the last 10 years ago. The hospital pharmacy is also short-staffed with just eight against the need of 16.

Moreover, availability of medicines is also in short supply. In all, currently the number of employees in the hospital staff is around 180 against the requirement of 234, sources said.

“The government has sanctioned Rs 2.71 crore for the development of the hospital,” Finance Minister E Rajender revealed, inaugurating the renovated paediatric ward in the hospital on Thursday.

In near future there would be no complaints of shortcomings in the hospital, the Minister asserted, stating that efforts are on to provide facilities on par with the corporate hospitals.

Agreeing that hospital is understaffed, hospital Superintendent A Suhasini told The Hans India: “A plan is on the anvil to procure MRI, scan and X-ray machines. As of now there is a CT scan machine in the hospital but we want to replace it with a sophisticated one.”

However, the hospital needs at least another 15 doctors, the immediate requirement is paramedical staff who play a critical role in the healthcare services, she said.

This apart, a complete makeover of buildings is the need of the hour as all the existing structures are in dilapidated condition, she said, expressing hope that all these requirements will be fulfilled as soon as the funds started to flow in. She said that under-construction maternity ward will be ready by December end.
