After persistent measures and incessant watch over the city to prevent crimes against women, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crimes and SIT, Swati Lakra, who is the head of ‘SHE Teams’ disclosed that violence against women has come down by 20 per cent in the past year.
Citing figures in support of her claim, Lakra said that 1,296 offences against women were reported during the year till September while the number of offenses against women during the corresponding period 2015 and 2014 was 1,521 and 1,606 respectively.
However, despite police taking action in cases of crime against women, there is no respite. Lakra said that though awareness has increased about campaigns over apps and social media, a lot of it is still ignored by people. Ironically, a clear majority of 76 per cent of the city are aware of ‘She Teams’ and their work.
Two years from its formation, SHE Teams has come a long way in spreading awareness about harassment of women, more popularly (although incorrectly) called as ‘Eve Teasing’. While majority of Hyderabad is aware of the team’s campaigns, there is still a long way to go in achieving the goal of a harassment-free city
“A lot of awareness programmes have been conducted directly and also by using technology due to which increasing number of survivors of gender-based violence are approaching the police for justice,” told Lakra to The Hans India.
Dismissing allegations that police are not accepting all complaints to keep crime rate under control, she said that instructions had been given to ground level officials to ensure free registration of all offences.
She said that though majority are aware of SHE teams, women, even educated ones, are unaware of new laws introduced by the government for their welfare.
“Despite having access to internet and smart phones, women are not showing interest in acquiring knowledge about the laws meant for them.
We are taking a lot of steps to create awareness among women about legal remedies available for them,” said Lakra.
