Sircilla: Textile Commissioner Shailaja Ramaiyer urged powerloom weavers not to commit suicides since the government is determined to help them and solve their problems.

On Tuesday she consoled the family members of Domala Ramesh, who committed suicide on Monday, unable to repay his debt of Rs 3 lakhs.

She said the government had announced Rs 1 lakh ex-gratia to Ramesh family. The Telangana government is taking necessary steps to solve all the problems of powerloom weavers.

Whatever problems powerloom weavers are facing such as health, financial, can contact the district administration or the District Collector directly to convey their problems, she appealed.

Later, Shailaja inspected the powerloom units of Hanumandla Ramnarayana and Hari Prasad. She directed the officials concerned to pay salaries in time to powerloom weavers.

The officials were told to make the weavers open bank accounts since all money transactions would be made through online only in the coming days.

For the welfare of the weavers, the government had purchased 117.71 lakhs meters of cloth at a cost of Rs 45.73 crores through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan. This would benefit as many as 6,000 weavers working in 51 powerloom units in the district, with extra salary of Rs 3,000 each.

The government is taking necessary steps to provide employment opportunities for powerloom weavers by giving cloth orders to powerloom units in the district required for government departments and also by establishing ‘Yarn Depots’ for supplying required raw materials to the parks and industries directly, she said.

As many as 5,500 weavers’ names were enrolled under Jana Sri Yojana and State Swathi Bima for providing better health services and the names of the remaining members would also be enrolled within the next two months, she assured.

The requests made by the owners of powerloom units for power tariff and to provide basic facilities for development of Integrated Park in Sircilla district would be taken to the notice of the government, she added.

District Collector D Krishna Bhaskar, Joint Collector Purna Chander, Assistant Director Ashok Rao, IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao’s Personal Secretary Srinivas and owners of Power-loom units were present along with others.
