Hanamkonda/Jangaon: Conducting vehicle inspections to check drunken driving cases was not aimed at collecting penalties but to ensure safety of the vehicle riders, asserted Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu.

Interacting with auto rickshaw drivers and the persons caught in drunken driving cases, he said most of the times road accidents occur due to careless attitude of those driving the vehicles. The vehicle inspections were being conducted to check such things and road accidents have come down due to the inspections.

Marking the 28th Road Safety Week, the city police have conducted a counselling session here on Wednesday to the auto rickshaw drivers and family members of the persons caught in drunken driving cases to create awareness on safety measures.

In coordination with traffic wing efforts would be made in the days to come to encourage illiterate drivers to attend open schooling to get eligibility to obtain driving licenses, the commissioner informed. He promised to address the grievances put forth by the auto drivers.

Central zone DCP MS Venugopal Rao, ACPs Chaitanya Kumar, B Janardhan and Muralidhar, traffic inspectors Kishore Kumar, Ramanujam, Babu Rao, SIs Ravi Raj, Prabhakar Reddy, Ravi Kiran and others were present.

At Jangaon, at a programme organised by the district transport department, District Collector A Devasena has released publicity material related to road safety. Speaking on the occasion, she said the aim of the road safety campaign was to emphasise and accentuate people about the need of safe road travel.

Every year lakhs of people were getting killed while many becoming sufferers of life threatening problems such as mental trauma, loss of limbs for whole life and one could avoid such things by applying simple safety rules, the collector said.

But by changing driving behaviour, one could help to make the roads in our villages, towns and cities safer places. Every action a person takes as a driver or as a passenger could change the outcome of a journey and ensure safety of the family, she added.
