Dealing with a PIL filed by Dr Ram Mohan, the bench also directed the State Pollution Control Board to initiate steps to ban plying of RTC buses causing pollution under the GHMC limits.

Taking a serious note of the pollution caused by the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, the PIL bench of the AP High Court comprising of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sen Gupta and Justice KC Bhanu on Monday directed the APSRTC to ensure, albeit in a phased manner, vehicles satisfy the BS4 emission prescriptions. Dealing with a PIL filed by Dr Ram Mohan, the bench also directed the State Pollution Control Board to initiate steps to ban plying of RTC buses causing pollution under the GHMC limits.

The bench directed the Board to monitor the entry points to the city and stop vehicles causing pollution in accordance with what it had stated in its comprehensive report. The bench also took cognisance of the admission by the APSRTC that a number of its vehicles did not satisfy the norms laid down by the Central Government of emissions of BS4 standards. According to the report, out of about 3,806 buses only 65 buses satisfied the prescription of the Central Government. The bench also noticed the undertaking of the APSRTC that it would acquire about 1,000 buses in the next five years in accordance with the directions of the apex court. The bench further directed the APSRTC and the Pollution Control Board to inspect all the buses and start discarding the most pollution causing buses in a phased manner.
