• Rs 25 lakh per lake allotted for restoration and beautification

In what can be a crucial move by the government in protecting lakes from encroachments and going extinct, over 2,857 lakes have been identified in and around the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. In addition to field verification of HMDA and GHMC, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) identified the lakes with the help of GIS maps and satellite imageries.

It listed out the lakes along with its latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates which will avoid further confusion on the location and size of the lakes.

Out of the total lakes identified in HMDA limits, 455 lakes fall in the limits of Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the remaining 2,402 outside the ORR. In order to avoid ambiguity, a master data base for the lakes has been prepared in a village, mandal and district-levels. “The FTL and buffer zones of 266 lakes out of 458 lakes within the city have been demarcated in coordination with irrigation and revenue department. While demarcation of other lakes is in the process and will be completed by December,” said Neerabh Kumar Prasad, HMDA Commissioner.

Illegal constructions that have come up in the FTL region will be demolished, he added.

Thereafter, pillars, chain linking fencing for FTL boundaries will be fixed and simultaneously the superimposition of FTL boundaries will be completed, said the official.

Beautification and cleaning of lakes will also be taken with an approximate cost of Rs 25 lakh for each lake. Various departments including GHMC, HMDA, revenue and irrigation would be funding the projects, he said.

“We have set aside Rs 10 crore fund for restoring and beautifying lakes in HMDA limit, while GHMC has categorically said they would take up lakes in their jurisdiction. We are also seeking funds from the government as a Lake Protection Committee (LPC),” said the HMDA Commissioner.

The HMDA chief and LPC chairman said that the lakes which will be given out for adoption by the local residential committee will be under their surveillance and can also call for sponsorship of the lake.

For further supervision and protection, a helpline number will be provided for complaints and a special monitoring cell with enforcement team will also be formed.
