The subject of bad roads has been brought to the notice of the GHMC commissioner in many ways; the most recent form of reaching out to the authorities has taken a virtual avatar. Through websites like change.org, the netizens of the city are culminating to find a solution for all the day-to-day civic nuances or discrepancies that one might come across. Jayakrishnan Sureshbabu, recently posted a petition to the commissioner, GHMC, M T Krishna Babu on change.org about the pathetic conditions of the city’s roads. On Friday, the online petition was signed by 8224 people, and was put before the commissioner. This petition not only pointed out the apathy that one has to go through while traversing the city’s pitiable roads, it also put forth recommendations which might help smoothen the civic body’s functioning if implemented. A group of youngsters along with Jayakrishnan Sureshbabu presented a hard copy of the petitions to the commissioner in his cabin. “We want the commissioner to know that the people of the city are actually concerned about the roads. We have come to him with 8000+ signatures and there will be more in the future,” said Jayakrishnan.
After going through the online petitions the commissioner clarified about the works that the GHMC is taking up. He also elaborated on the plans that the GHMC has for the future.
M T Krishna Babu, said, “ We have already sanctioned Rs 18 crore to take up immediate road repair work on all the major bus-plying routes in the city which amounts to 830 kilometres. Of all the 6230 km that comes under the GHMC jurisdiction the R&B and NHAI will look upon their respective roads. We have set a deadline of October 10 for the completion of these works.” He further added that over 19000 potholes have been identified in their limits and they will be using hot mix to fill the potholes. If the extent of damage cannot be repaired by the hot mix they will issue the work to a private contractor. Apart from this the GHMC has also identified 152 Bituminous roads (BT roads ) which have been damaged by the rains and water stagnation. The commissioner has assured that these works will be taken up by November and they will be spending close to Rs 100 crore on this project. He added that the BT roads will be replaced by either CC roads or interlocked pavers.
After their meeting with the commissioner Jayakrishnan said, “We have given our representation to the officials, we just wanted to show him that there are people concerned about the conditions of the city.” On asking him about the next step he said, “We will be filing an RTI about the roads in some time and if it is a null result, we will resort to filing a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) in this regard.”
