Every other day we read reports of fatal accidents on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Though this has been happening for quite some time, authorities haven’t paid any heed to it. Couple of weeks earlier, two people lost their lives when a car overturned at Rallagudda. In the investigations, it was found that the Tata Safari was over speeding and lost control, while navigating a curve. There were five passengers in the vehicle – two died on the spot and three suffered grievous injuries.
From October 17, indifference of authorities towards fatal accidents is set to change. If you are found over speeding on the ORR, driving under the influence of alcohol or have parked your vehicle on the main carriage way, then you will be forced to cough up Rs 1000 for flouting the rules. This measure, taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), is to check the increase in the number of accidents on the ORR. As part of this drive, the HMDA authorities have acquired five special patrol vehicles that would be on duty 24x7 and will also slap a fine of Rs 1000 on the offenders.
There will be a sub-inspector and two constables manning the vehicle which is equipped with a speed gun, breathalyser, dragon light with a focus range of 1 km and accident prevention sign boards. This is a joint initiative by the HMDA and Cyberabad Police. In the first phase, which will begin from October 17, the special patrolling vehicles will be monitoring the Pedda Amberpet – Patancheru stretch of the ORR.
“ORR was constructed to offer a faster means of transport, but accidents are happening due to blatant flouting of rules by many. To keep that in check, we will be charging Rs 1000 fine on a pilot basis from October 17. We are procuring more vehicles and are confident that patrolling on the entire ORR stretch will be implemented by end of November,” said Samuel Anand, project director, Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL).
