Now that it has become evident that the city will be lashed with no more rains, it is high time that the GHMC officials begin the post-monsoon desilting works.

The desilting process involves removal of silt and other debris that might be lodged inside a naala creating an overflow of water. This will in-turn increase the amount of pressure which is laid on the sewerage pipelines.

The conditions of the naalas in the city are deplorable as they were laid down during the Nizam’s era and were meant to cater to the population of that era. Whereas now, the population has increased ten-fold.

In this regard Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, TDP Floor Leader, GHMC claims that the GHMC still doesn’t have an established layout of the underground naalas in possession. In 2011, Kirloskar and Voyant Solutions had submitted a report which had suggestions on what has to be done in terms of sewerage pipelines and naalas.

The report has still not been taken in to consideration and none of the recommendations have been carried out. It was also resolved in 2011, by the standing committee.

The floor leader, says, “The pre-monsoon desilting work is just a half-hearted attempt because it is done in the months of May, June and July but at that time the silt is still wet and it flows away with the water. And the contractors mint money during this season.

To clean out the naalas properly there must be an active post-monsoon desilting work also. Because in the months of November, January and April the naalas are dry which will make it easier for desilting.”

Apart from the fact that the silt will be dry, it is also considered safer for the safai karamcharis as there will be no toxic gases or water flow.

Additionally, in the recent times, due to the mismanagement of the naalas, a few roads have also caved in place like Tilaknagar, Indira Park, Banjara Hills and NIMS.

The floor leader has submitted a representation the commissioner in this regard.
