73 Lakes Vanished, Says A Survey

Ameerpet to the younger generation signifies a hub of colleges, training institutes and business houses. Sadly, not many know that there used to be a lake some years ago in the area. With the explosion of population, it has vanished. The city is fast expanding and one can’t even find a small water body, let alone a lake. A recent survey by the revenue department says that as many as 73 lakes have vanished from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) area.

According to old revenue records, Masab Tank was a lake. Now it houses government offices and has transformed into a residential hub. Nallakunta, one of the biggest residential areas, had a lake called ‘Bathukamma Kunta’ and now it has vanished. Nagamaiah Kunta, another lake in the area, has now turned into a slum. The city was once famous for its lakes. As many as 500 lakes in the city were interconnected. All it took was one heavy downpour to fill all of them. However, most shrunk in size over the years and subsequently vanished.

A field survey undertaken by the revenue department said that 73 lakes had vanished from the HMDA area. The report was forwarded to the HMDA. Revenue officials mentioned that the prime reason for the vanishing of lakes was due to encroachments and the surge of colonies. According to the survey, 40 lakes in Ranga Reddy, 8 in Hyderabad, 20 in Nalgonda and 5 lakes in Mahbubnagar which fall under the HMDA limits have vanished.
