Rajaiah, a sixty-two year-old patient with multiple complications, was treated successfully by a team of doctors at Aware Global Hospitals, LB Nagar. Doctors of different specialties conducted a marathon surgical programme on him.

He was admitted in the hospital with complaints of irregular bowel habits, giddiness and breathlessness and a history of blood in stools for over two weeks. Doctors conducted clinical tests and diagnosed colon cancer, multiple heart blocks, narrowed carotid and kidney arteries in him. They treated all problems successfully.

“On CT scan of the abdomen and colonoscopic evaluation, a growth in the colon was observed. The biopsy suggested colonic cancer. On further evaluation by the cardiologist, he was detected with severe carotid artery stenosis and renal artery stenosis and blockages in three of the heart vessels. Rajaiah first underwent stenting of bilateral carotid and renal arteries and was treated through medical management for rectal bleeding,” said Dr Dharma Rakshak Ayapati, director (cardio thoracic surgery), Aware Global Hospitals.
“In the meantime, he again had bleeding from the tumour due to colonic cancer. So an immediate decision was taken to combine both coronary bypass surgery and colon cancer surgery for the patient’s benefit. Patient recovered gradually and was discharged eight days after the surgery,” he added.
Dr Pradeep Panigrahi, senior consultant, minimal access and gi surgery, Aware Global Hospitals, said, “Individually all these morbidities - triple vessel disease, colon cancer etc carry high risk to the patient’s life.”
“Post coronary bypass surgery patients are kept on blood thinners and GI surgeries carry risk of bleeding with anticoagulants. But when there is risk of bleeding from the colonic cancer, then both procedures need to be combined for patient benefit in view.
These combined procedures in presence of other vascular morbidities like carotid and renal artery stenosis are rare instances” he explained further.
