To promote 'Swachh Bharat'

On Sunday, it was the turn of actor Akkineni Nagarjuna to take up the Swachh Bharat campaign.

Accompanied by wife Amala, sister Naga Susheela and nephew Sushanth, the actor took to the streets in Jubilee Hills to spruce up the Swachh Bharat initiative. The Akkineni family was also accompanied by volunteers from the Annapurna Studios.

Nagarjuna was recently nominated by industrialist Anil Ambani to undertake the campaign and thanked the latter for inviting him. He said that India would soon become a clean nation.

"Thank you Anil for keeping the faith and inviting me to the Clean India campaign. It is a proud moment and a huge responsibility. My vow is to find ways to engage people and sustain the awareness as well as create millions of 'Swachh Bharat' ambassadors," Nagarjuna said in a statement.

"While I travel abroad, I always wonder how clean some countries are, now with Clean India Challenge, I am confident and optimistic if every citizen takes part in the campaign seriously, India is not very far from getting listed among the clean nations of the world," he added.

As part of the campaign, Nagarjuna unveiled a website to spread awareness about the programme and encourage people's participation. The website -- www.nag4swachhbharat.org -- will also use millions of Nagarjuna's fans on social-networking platforms to create micro level ambassadors and organise ‘Swachh Bharat’ events.

"This is not a onetime event, it is a translation of my pledge to keep the neighbourhood clean, create many more ambassadors and collaborate with like-minded people across the region to expand and sustain the Swachh Bharat movement," Nagarjuna said.

He advocated the use of litter bins and taking time to clear up garbage on the streets to keep the surroundings hygienic.

Nagarjuna, who has 6.18 lakh followers on Twitter and 1,079,031 on Facebook, nominated actors Sudeep, Allu Arjun and badminton champion Pullela Gopichand among others to participate in the campaign and spread awareness.
