South Central Railway (SCR) late Tuesday night honoured some of the best performing contemporary sportspersons from the twin cities, including some not employed by them, in appreciation of their recent exploits.
South Central Railway (SCR) late Tuesday night honoured some of the best performing contemporary sportspersons from the twin cities, including some not employed by them, in appreciation of their recent exploits. Some old timers were also felicitated during the programme, which was named ‘Surmaiyee Khel Ratnon Sang’.
Speaking on the occasion, General Manager and chief patron of South Central Railway Sports Association (SCRSA) that organised the function, P K Srivastava called upon the railway sports fraternity to strive continuously for achieving excellence in their specialization in order to enhance the glory of railways and the nation across the international firmament.
Srivastava said it was a tribute to the employees’ collective grit and determination that their achievements had propelled SCR Zone to the top rankings in various national level sporting events amongst all Zones of Indian Railways.
He expressed happiness over the recent Padma Shri decoration to Indian women cricket captain, Mithali Raj and shuttler P V Sindhu, whose father and sports officer of SCR, P V Ramana, was among those
felicitated for his contribution to volleyball.
Badminton guru Pullela Gopichand praised SCR for taking steps to promote multiple sports disciplines and giving employment to talented athletes, who, on their part, were keeping the flag flying high.
Former Indian hockey captain, N Mukesh Kumar, advised the railway sportspersons not to rest on past laurels but endevour to scale the pinnacle while dishing out consistent performances.
Gajanan Mallya, President of SCRSA presented a detailed report about the achievements of SCRSA and plans aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure that were in the pipeline. S K Agarwal, AGM, and former spiker Shyam Sundar Rao also spoke.
Apart from Mithali Raj, Sindhu and Ramana, others where felicitated on the occasion included Arjuna awardees V Ravikanth Reddy (Volleyball), J J Shobha (Athletics), V Tejaswini Bai (Kabaddi) and Mamatha
(Kabaddi). Senior office-bearers of SCRSA Rakesh Aron and K Sivaprasad were also present.
