A three-day open hearing and camp of the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) concluded on Thursday. The camp was held to receive complaints on human rights violations of the people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. During the course of the meeting Justice Cyriac Joseph, Justice D Murugesan and SC Sinha heard close to 61 cases. The issues of discussions covered reforms in jails, bonded labour, police atrocities, grabbing of land of Scheduled Caste (SC) people, delay in submission of reports, etc.

The issue of farmer suicide was discussed in detail with the State functionaries, where they informed that steps are being taken to alleviate the problems of farmers through schemes like debt waivers and drought proof irrigation. APSRTC bus services, which were withdrawn earlier, have been restored in a Schedule Caste village after the intervention of the commission.

The commission also recommended compensation of one lakh rupees to a victim of sexual harassment. The matter pertaining to death of 20 red sanders during the course of police action in Chittoor on April 7 was taken up by the commission along with the issue of delay in rehabilitation of 920 bonded labourers in Krishna district.
