Come June, Raj Bhavan will be the first in the country to run wholly on solar power. According to sources, the Raj Bhavan consumes about 2,550 units of power per day to meet its power needs. Come June, Raj Bhavan will be the first in the country to run wholly on solar power. According to sources, the Raj Bhavan consumes about 2,550 units of power per day to meet its power needs. The GOI had earlier sanctioned Rs 1 crore for all the Raj Bhavans across the country under a Stand Alone Project (SAP) to install solar power.

In addition to this, Governor ESL Narasimhan had reportedly spent some more as the Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP) installed 165 kw solar power panels. With this, the dependability of Raj Bhavan for its regular power supply of 2,550 units per day has drastically been brought down to 250 units.

“By May 15, another 50 kw of solar power panels will be added which will ensure that there will be zero dependence on power from conventional power by June 1,” the officials added. This will ensure that the Raj Bhavan in the city will be the first in India to completely depend on green energy. “However, the regular power connection will be available to meet any emergencies. Any excess power generated could be sold to the grid,” sources said.

Solar power in AP hospitals soon The NEDCAP had already installed a total of 1,000 kw of solar power in Gandhi, Osmania and Niloufer hospitals saving about Rs 16 lakh in power bills of the institutions. Taking a cue, NEDCAP will be installing about 500 kw solar power panels at the General Hospital in Vijayawada. “Proposals to replicate the same at the general hospitals in Guntur, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam are under active consideration of the government,” a senior official of NEDCAP said.

In the second phase, all district hospitals would be covered. Apart from this, a survey is on to figure out the total space available atop all the government offices in Andhra Pradesh. “Once we figure out the space and the fitness of the building is certified by the State Roads and Building department, we will install solar power panels over these offices too,” he said.
