L&T using services of minor children?
Child labour is being used in construction of the Metro rail project in Hyderabad, but neither the Metro Rail nor the L&T seems to willing to take the responsibility of violating the rules. The Hans India has found out that children who have completed class seven and eight are working at the construction site in Ameerpet area near the state home and in some areas of Secunderabad.

Hyderabad: Child labour is being used in construction of the Metro rail project in Hyderabad, but neither the Metro Rail nor the L&T seems to willing to take the responsibility of violating the rules. The Hans India has found out that children who have completed class seven and eight are working at the construction site in Ameerpet area near the state home and in some areas of Secunderabad.
When asked, the workers at the Metro station in Ameerpet said that they do not employ children. When pointed out that if that was the case, how come some children are seen working, they said, “You are seeing some of them right now only because they are having summer vacation. About 10 minors are working here and it is more of a time pass and they earn some pocket money since they don’t have school and are at leisure,” said Sreenivasulu, one of the workers at the metro work site.
It is interesting to note that this has been happening right under the nose of the women and child welfare department whose office is located near the Metro station. Ibrahim who is one of the child workers said he had completed class eight and had come to work in Hyderabad from Jharkhand. He was brought here by some contractor along with a group of workers.
Mamatha, daughter of a construction worker said, “My brother Mahesh completed class seven. He is working since then. My parents and me are also labourers and we stay here only.” These children are hired by Abdullah. According to Abdullah’s father even his grandson was working at the site. He however said that his grandson was not a minor. “The boys and girls of young age are the children of construction workers,” he said.
Some of them are hired from various places in Telangana State. They are the daily wage workers who are sent from one site to the other depending upon the work. When contacted, NVS Reddy, Chief executive & M D of Hyderabad said, Hyderabad Metro Rail is only facilitator from government side, whereas it was Larson & Toubro Limited which is constructing the Metro Rail project. It is they who engage the labour and technicians for the project, he said. V B Gadgil, Chief Executive & Managing Director of L & T Metro Rail was however not reachable for any clarification.
