The Municipal Special Chief Secretary MG Gopal and Urban Futurist Stephen Yarwood flagged off the second edition of ‘Chak De India Ride’ at Hyderabad Bicycling Club’s (HBC) station in Gachibowli on Sunday.

A large number of cyclists from all walks of life participated in the prestigious event, which made for an eco-friendly platform. Speaking after the flag off, Gopal said, “The Telangana Government will continue to create better and enabling environment for cycling in the city.” He promised to include cycling tracks in the master plan and expressed commitment to work in that direction.

Stephen Yarwood said, “Hyderabad and India have to make a choice between unproductive, unliveable, polluted cities with traffic jams or less polluted places with good public transport.” Transport Commissioner, Govt. of Telangana, Sandeep Sultania said, “The vehicle numbers and pollution levels has seen alarming rise in the city. Hyderabad had 25 lakh vehicles in 2005. Today, a decade later it has 90 lakh vehicles.

Cycle promotion is a good way to move forward. Reducing pollution levels is every ones responsibility. HMR is also working towards last mile cycling.” The MD for Hyderabad Metro Railways NVS Reddy said, “UN Habitat will be granting from its Climate Change Fund to Hyderabad. We will buy high-end bicycles from the same to facilitate easy access of bicycles to everyone at a very affordable hire cost.”

“The HBC is working vigorously towards promoting cycling to transform the commuting culture in our city to be more eco friendly. Through this event, we aim at bringing out all the cycling enthusiasts to come and ride and give a big thrust to the cycling movement in our city,” said DV Manohar, Chairman of HBC. The ‘Chak De India Ride’ has two categories that include ‘Mass Ride’ (10 km) and a ‘Competitive Endurance Ride’ (50 km).

Thousands of cyclists from all walks of life participated in this prestigious event. TSN Reddy, VP, HBC; Shekar Reddy, Past National President, CREDAI and Sushil Goenka, Director, 3F Industries were present on the occasion.
