It is no wonder that the city performed dismally in the recent ‘Swachh Survekshan 2017’ survey; the GHMC was at number 22. Both the people and the GHMC are at fault because the former continues to dump garbage in empty plots and open lands and the latter does not clear it on time.

It is no wonder that the city performed dismally in the recent ‘Swachh Survekshan 2017’ survey; the GHMC was at number 22. Both the people and the GHMC are at fault because the former continues to dump garbage in empty plots and open lands and the latter does not clear it on time.

Over the past few days Hyderabad has seen strong winds and consequently this overflowing garbage is flying on the roads and into people’s houses. In addition, trees that fell in the recent storm are also part of this garbage.

Nobody seems to be taking the responsibility for proper recycling of regular garbage generated in the city. Areas like Kalyan Nagar Colony, BodUppal, Uppal, Nacharam, Ramanthapur and Amberpet suffer from heavy garbage dumping, which is now raising foul smell.

Satya Narayana, head of the colony association of Kalyan Nagar said that the situation is only becoming worse by the day. “Garbage from all the houses somehow falls here in the empty plots we have in our colony. People throw it as if it wouldn’t affect them but, now it is stinking and mosquitoes breed more than ever,” he rued.

Though there are people who go from house-to-house to pick up the garbage early morning but, these workers are hardly regular and sometimes skip their duty for weeks. Uppal Corporator Anala Reddy explains the terrible situation near Laxma Reddy road and empty plots opposite Laxmi Reddy Gardens; people lack a basic sense of responsibility, he feels.

“People who pick garbage from house-to-house (one rickshaw puller and a few women) expect a minimum of Rs 50 a month. In addition, they dump the garbage they collect in the nearest nala. Within no time all the empty plots opposite Laxmi Reddy Gardens are filled with garbage,” she shared.

Senior officials of Health and Sanitation, GHMC explain that keeping a colony clean must be the responsibility of the public living there once enough garbage bins have provided. The GHMC garbage trucks move from colony to colony picking garbage from the bins.

“Public must take the responsibility in some manner. The people who pick garbage don’t expect huge amounts and we expect public to pay for their own clean and healthy environment,” said the official.
