HEAL Foundation launched ‘Health Journalism ‘Fellowship in association with Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at the fifth National Health Writers and Editors Convention here on Friday.

Hitec City: HEAL Foundation launched ‘Health Journalism ‘Fellowship in association with Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at the fifth National Health Writers and Editors Convention here on Friday.

The initiative serves as both recognition and promotion of high quality health journalism across India. It serves to stimulate and contribute to the debate of health issues and challenges faced in Indian healthcare domain.

The fellowship is open to all practising health journalists across the country. “We invite participation from print, broadcast, and multimedia journalists working for or contributing to mainstream and ethnic media outlets in India,” said a statement from organisers.

Rai Umraopati Ray, Executive Director, HEAL Foundation said that the fellowship offer journalists a chance to step away from the newsroom to hone their health reporting skills, providing critical resources at a time of dramatic change in the media landscape. “In workshops, field trips and discussions, Fellows will learn from nationally renowned health experts, policy analysts and community health leaders, from top journalists in the field, and from each other,” he said.

About 10 practising health journalists will be selected for five intensive days of training on health issues, challenges and reporting, which will be conducted at IIMC under the guidance of Director General. Upon successful completion, the journalists shall be awarded the Fellowship Certificates along with cash rewards.

KG Suresh, Director General, IIMC said, “Our efforts would be to teach best journalistic practices and to help journalists explore the root causes of ill
health, barriers to health care access, the built environment, lack of access to healthy food and other such factors.”

The window for submitting applications for the 2018 fellowship year is now open and shall remain so until December 30. Interested health journalists can visit the website of Heal Foundation www.healfoundation.in
