As if the the state didn't have enough misery in the form of agitations and fasts, heavy rainfall caught the residents of Hyderabad unaware. Several parts of Andhra Pradesh was lashed by heavy rains. Hyderabad received 9.48 mm rainfall on Wednesday. This is the highest in the last few months. The downpour that started at noon continued through the night till early this morning.

According to Met department, a very severe cyclone named Phailin will hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha over the next 72 hours. Last evenings heavy rains threw life out of gear in Hyderabad with traffic coming to a standstill. Waterlogged roads made it impossible for commuters to travel smooth. Scenes of slow moving traffic with vehicles submerged in water was a common sight in almost all the roads in the city.

The high-intensity winds also blew off a huge cut-out of Congress president Sonia Gandhi which fell on the road blocking road traffic for a good hour and a half. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy held an emergency meeting and asked the officials to be on alert and constantly monitor the situation and can request for helicopters, boats and coast guard services etc in advance.
