Highlights

World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4 every year and this year a slew of activities such as reading and writing competitions, apart from three-dimensional science models, would be displayed for the students at the Devnar Foundation. Union labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya would be the chief guest on the occasion.

In Telangana, there are close to 5,000 blind students but just about 1,000 get education. With just four government run blind schools; two in Hyderabad and one each in Karimnagar and Mahbubnagar, the lack of schools and the unavailability of textbooks in Braille is a problem.

50,000 Braille books distributed

Devnar Foundation has been printing a series of biographies on eminent personalities. Books on general knowledge, AIDS awareness and other topics were distributed in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Till date over 50,000 Braille books have been distributed on general knowledge and AIDS awareness.

Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the Braille version of the biography of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. Dr A Saibaba Goud, chairman, Devnar Foundation, says, “Swamy Vivekananda’s life history is being translated into Braille and is likely to be released in a couple of months.”

Dr Saibaba Goud says that the books would be distributed for free and the foundation would be printing 500 copies each. Dr Saibaba says, “Biographies of great men can do wonders in lifting the spirit of children. Even if a few get inspired and aspire to make it big, it would be worth the effort.” On the occasion of World Braille Day, 110 woolen blankets would be distributed to blind students. Prizes would be given to the winners of reading and writing competitions.
