Speedsters beware! The Hyderabad Traffic Police will be soon launching a campaign to crackdown on four and two-wheeler racing at Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Necklace Road. The racers will be fined and subjected to counselling by the police.

To nab the speedsters, the cops will employ speed laser guns during wee hours. The guns will be mounted on tripods, which would be hidden, and would capture images of speeding vehicles. Once an image is captured, the police will immediately intimate their counterparts at the next location.

The laser gun is sophisticated where images and details of a vehicle can be processed in just 0.3 seconds. Each gun costs around Rs 10 lakh. The gun emits laser beams up to a distance of 1.5 km and can measure speeds upto a maximum of 500 kmph.

According to officials, the speed limit on the identified stretches is 50 kmph. If a vehicle crosses that limit, its image would be captured by the speed guns. The cops will also ensure that the identified roads are partially barricaded at night to cut down the speed of vehicles. The cops will also increase vigil and setup check points to catch hold of the offenders. “Currently, Hyderabad Traffic Police has 10 laser guns in its stock. The campaign is aimed to deter youngsters from indulging in illegal races,” said Jitender, Additional Commissioner (Traffic).
