Findings from epidemiological studies could help the medical fraternity and the State to tackle health problems but there has hardly been a study of its worth in the recent past. “Research on public health and occupational health is least on the list of priority of medical practitioners as well as others,” avers W G Prasanna Kumar, social scientist, Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB).

The last time a study was conducted was 16 years ago by Dr Tipanna of Chest Hospital. Every year, many traffic police personnel get affected by pulmonary diseases. Prasanna Kumar says there is a need for studies on different aspects of air pollution on not just police personnel but also on other groups such as salesmen. Research and studies on occupational health is of least concern and that has to change. After all, the findings would help not just tackle a health issue but also on the whole management of eco-system of traffic management, says Prasanna Kumar.
