The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be implementing several schemes to make Hyderabad a slum-free city in near future. This was stated by GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer Somesh Kumar during the 66th Republic Day celebrations at civic body’s headquarters.

“The State government has sanctioned Rs 250 crore for the improvement of slums. The GHMC is coming up with a huge budget of Rs 20,000 crore to take up works like beautification of roads and construction of flyovers on the lines of PVNR Expressway. The GHMC is also planning to take up construction of skywalks in the near future,” stated the Commissioner.

Somesh Kumar added that the GHMC has launched several innovative schemes in the last one year and it would continue to implement such welfare programmes. He mentioned that Rs 5 meal scheme was benefitting 6,500 people on a daily basis at 20 centres.

“Similarly, 408 poor drivers have now become owners of the vehicles. The State government has also taken up the weaker sections housing colony scheme where two bedroom flats for 396 houses are getting constructed at IDH Colony,” said Somesh Kumar. Special Commissioner Navin Mittal, Additional Commissioners, Zonal Commissioners, senior officials and staff of the GHMC have also participated in the Republic Day celebrations.
