The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other local bodies to take up the identification and demarcation of lakes. The field staff of the revenue department, the irrigation department and other local bodies was involved in the undertaking.

The field staff of the revenue department, the irrigation department and other local bodies was involved in the undertaking.

There are 2,857 lakes in the HMDA’s limits, out of which 168 lakes fall in the GHMC’s jurisdiction and the remaining 2,689 lakes are in the gram panchayats and municipalities. Consultants have been engaged by the HMDA and the GHMC to assist the irrigation and revenue departments in demarcation and fixing of the Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries and for preparation of lake maps in the erstwhile Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) area.

The demarcation of FTL boundaries has already been completed for 521 lakes and for the remaining lakes is in process. imilarly, the demarcation of FTL boundaries and preparation of lake maps for 4,202 lakes identified outside ORR are in progress. 26 lakes yet to be identified Out of the 168 lakes in GHMC limits, 26 are yet to be identified. The remaining lakes are linked with GPS and the 26 unidentified lakes have been handed over to the revenue department.
