In what otherwise is a standard routine at Lamakaan, the screening of films and documentaries on Saturday on the 13th anniversary of Gujarat riots was marred by chaos and hullabaloo. The audience exchanged heated arguments with noted Dalit activist and writer Kancha Ilaiah who was the chief guest at the function. All was fine until Ilaiah raked up the issue of right-wing activists and their influence on the society.

“I am a Dalit and I have been facing the wrath of the society since childhood. It’s the Hindu communal parties who have sown the seeds of hatred amongst their own by drawing a line between upper caste and lower caste Hindus,” lamented Kancha. The author went a step further and questioned the portrayal of Hindu Gods with weapons and picturing Lord Krishna as the one who steals.

This irked the audience who then quizzed Ilaiah on his loyalty towards the religion. Some of them were furious and yelled that Ilaiah was drifting from the topic of communal harmony to hatred against a particular religion. After a volley of words, the coordinator had to intervene to restore civility.

Raghu, a student who attended the event only to learn about the riots was disgusted by the turn of events. “We live in a democratic society and I have no issues hanging around with people from different religions. But activists like these disturb harmony in the society. Politicians, writers and spiritual leaders are the ones who are not allowing India to grow as they have a communal mindset,” he opined.
