From Thailand with love
Even as the nation keeps celebrating the triumphs of Sania Mirza, the face of Indian tennis who has inspired a generation of players, another unassuming city-based teenager is gradually ascending the success ladder in her own modest, but steadfast, way. Yadlapalli Pranjala, one of the finest prospects from the country, has become the toast of the nation on Saturday in far-off Thailand.
The second seeded Pranjala annexed the girl’s singles title with aplomb when she whipped fourth seeded Indonesian (and her doubles partner), Deria Nur Haliza with a clinical 6-4, 6-1 demolition in the title clash of the Chang ITF Junior Grade 1 tournament at National Tennis Development Centre in Nonthaburi.
Unfortunately for Pranjala, who is sponsored by GVK Group, she missed out on a double having lost the doubles finals on Friday. Incidentally, she clinched her maiden Grade 1 title without dropping set in the tournament. In her immediate reaction, she expressed delight that she could deliver in a very important tournament and prove her talent.
‘I wish to thank the GVK Foundation for making my tours possible. I am also obliged to my school management for giving me the freedom to participate in tournaments. I hope this marks the beginning of more international laurels,’ says Pranjala, a XI Standard student of Chinmaya Vidyalaya at Begumpet. Meanwhile, there is another joy because she completes 16 years on March 30. The family is already planning a celebration for the perfect birthday present she has gifted them. She is likely to visit the GVK Foundation on her return on Sunday.
