Sathya Vani PadmaThe word waste occupies a whole new meaning for 50-year-old Sathya Vani Padma. The school administrator employs her skill to mould waste into showcase items. Straws, water bottles and plastic caps are some of the items which she uses to make chains, bags, wall hangers, vase, flower pots etc. Similarly tablet strips, zips, buttons, papers, shells and stones are used Sathya to create her work of art.

Sathya ventured into this activity two decades ago when she was entangled in family problems. “Every woman in the society has some problem either at home or in office. One should not waste time worrying about such problems. We should instead divert our mind to some or the other activities. This will make us happy. Using our creativity in handcraft to invent something will help us achieve something and earn a livelihood,” she explains.

It’s not just handcraft, Sathya also indulges in saree painting, embroidery work, stitching, etc. Many women flock to Sathya for her creative designs on blouses and sarees. Apart from these activities, Sathya teaches her craft to poor women during the weekend. She also comes up with a variety of cuisines most of which is published in vernacular print media. “All this is possible because of the support offered by my family and my 84-year-old mother Rajya Lakshmi who has been an inspiration,” she concludes.
