Sril Lanka Says Foreign Minister\'s US Visit Successful. The Sri Lankan government Sunday said its foreign minister\'s just-concluded visit to the US was successful.

Colombo: The Sri Lankan government Sunday said its foreign minister's just-concluded visit to the US was successful.

Minister Mangala Samaraweera briefed US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the efforts taken by the new Sri Lankan government to address human rights concerns, Xinhua reported.

Sri Lanka has been accused of committing human rights abuses during the final stages of the war between Tamil Tigers and the military which ended in May 2009.

The US has led efforts to push Sri Lanka to agree to an international probe on the war but the previous government of Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected the move.

Colombo said the visit by Samaraweera, his first to the US capital since assuming office last month, followed the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal to Colombo this month.

The Sri Lankan minister spoke on the steps being taken for reconciliation, to strengthen democracy and to deliver good governance.
