London: Palestinian fighters have reportedly made advances following clashes with Islamic State (IS) militants in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, Palestinian officials said.

A spokesman for one faction said that the terror group was forced to retreat from some positions, reported the BBC.

Residents said that after being pushed back by Palestinian fighters, IS militants withdrew to the neighbouring area of Hajar al-Aswad .

About 18,000 people had been besieged by the Syrian army for two years in Yarmouk.

The United Nations had voiced concerns about the safety of the Palestinians and Syrian civilians trapped inside the town, which it said was "the deepest circle of hell."
