The revelation has prompted disciplinary action in several hundred cases but there is no loss to taxpayers as cardholders are required to pay the cost of unauthorized or personal use transactions themselves, reported ABC News.

The report however, did not state how many employees had improperly used their cards, which are meant to be used for travel purposes.

The Defense Department's Inspector General will release an audit later this month entitled, 'Government Travel Charge Card Transactions Made at Casinos or Adult Entertainment Establishments.'

About 1.6 million employees of the Defense Department have the travel cards.
