While flying over Ireland, the aircraft heading to New-York returned to Heathrow-London airport a few moments after it took off due to laser strike, said the police on Monday.

The security forces were alerted that "reports of a laser light aiming at an aircraft which just took off from Heathrow" on Sunday evening, said a spokeperson. The Virgin Atlantic company aircraft departed for New-York was flying over Ireland till it made a request for returning, according to flight data.

A staff member informed the air traffic controllers that one pilot was having "a medical problem due an incident involving a laser that occurred immediately after take-off", according to radio recordings.

Hundreds of incidents involving laser beams aiming at aircrafts are registered every year. One man was arrested after a green laser beam aimed at several aircraft cockpits flying over South-Eastern county of Kent, said the police.
