Dhaka: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal on Wednesday held discussions with senior Bangladesh Foreign Ministry officials on combating terrorism and extremism.

Biswal arrived on a two-day visit here to hold meetings with senior government officials following the brutal murder of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) employee and LGBT activist Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tonoy, reports the Daily Star.

The US diplomat had a three-hour meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Md. Shahidul Haque at state guesthouse, where bilateral issues of mutual interest including the current security situation in the country were discussed.

Biswal after the meeting tweeted ,"Important talks with FM Ali, State Minister Alam, & FS Haque on the US-#Bangladesh partnership and combating terrorism & extremism."

She was assisted by US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat, Deputy Chief of Mission David Meal, Political and Economic Counselor Andrea Brouillette-Rodriguez and other senior officials.
