Adilabad: Two Girijan cotton farmers of Adilabad district committed suicide on Friday by consuming pesticide. They took the extreme step after failing to achieve cotton crop in proportion to their investments as their crop was affected by pink bollworm, despite the announcement of the minimum support price.

The victims were identified as Sitaram of Ramunipalle village in Thamsi mandal and Bapurao of Balanpur village in Narnoor mandal.Sitaram took a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh and cultivated cotton in his five acres and another three acres, which he took on lease. The spurious seeds failed to give him good yield.

His wife Sita Devi said her husband was depressed over the debt burden and ended his life, making his three children fatherless. Bapurao took a lona of Rs 70,000 from Deccan Grameena Bank and another Rs 70,000 from a private money lender to raise cotton in his five acres. He was worried as he couldn’t get even 10 quintals per acre due to spurious seeds.

The depressed Bapurao drank pesticide to end his life on Thursday night, when his family members were sleeping, his wife Savitirbai said. The couple has two children, who appealed the State government to come to the rescue of the family.

District BJP president Payala Shankar called on the two bereaved families to console them. He demanded that at least now the TRS government should provide relief to cotton farmers in distress.
