Speaking on the occasion, the organisers said Dr B R Ambedkar had provided protection for weaker sections in the Constitution.The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act is meant for protecting the people belonging to the SCs and STs, they said.

Supreme Court delivered a verdict, banning automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of SCs and STs had diluted the Act, they felt. Opposing the Supreme Court order, the Dalit, Girijana, Ambedkar Unions observed Bharath Bandh Monday, they said.

They demanded that the Central government take immediate action for protecting the rights of Dalits, tribals and weaker sections by filing a review petition.Later, the representatives of the various peoples organisations submitted a memorandum to the District Collector D S Lokesh Kumar.

The representatives of various people’s organisation N Shankar, K Vijaya Lakshmi, G Veerabhadram, K Upendra, P Rajashekar, Bhadru Naik, Madhu, M Prabhakar, Mabohar, Venkatrao, Mohan, Murali, P Prasad, Venkateshwarlu, Nagabushanam, Lalitha, Nirmala, Roja, Jacob, Kishan Naik, Gangadhar and Koteshwar were present along with others.
