Melbourne: An Indian student who had over-stayed his visa committed suicide in an Australian immigration detention centre near here, a newspaper reported Friday.

The 27-year-old hung himself in his cell at the centre Thursday night, The Sydney Morning Herald said.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said the man was found unconscious. Victoria Police said the death was not being considered "suspicious".

The government expressed sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased and pledged to provide support to police and other authorities to assist with their investigation.

Louise Newman, a professor at Monash University, said the environment of the detention centres was fostering mental illnesses.
