New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien on Monday suspended two TDP MPs from Seemandhra region, Y S Chowdary and C M Ramesh, for a day, for continuously disrupting proceedings in the House by protesting against the decision to form Telangana.

Action against Y S Chowdary and C M Ramesh came after they trooped into the well of the House during the post-lunch session, holding placards as part of their continuous protests since the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 5. Kurien gave Chowdhury three minutes to speak, on condition that he and his party colleague would not come to the Well after that. But, both the TDP members kept protesting. Chowdary demanded a statement from the government on the issue. Bur Kurien's repeated appeals to them to go back to their seats and to allow the House to function went in vain and he suspended them by invoking the Rule 255. Then the House was adjourned for 30 minutes.

In a related incident, suspended TDP members of the Lok Sabha on Monday launched hunger-strike in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament House complex. Late in the night, the Parliament security people foiled the fast of TDP MPs and took them to Ram Manohan Lohia Hospital. N Kristappa, K Narayan Rao and M Venugopal Reddy sat on fast and it will go on till the decision on bifurcation is withdrawn and fresh talks are held with all stakeholders.

The TDP MPs sat in the open, when the humidity levels were very high and it was a very hot day. The TDP MPs did not even sit in a shade. The TDP MPs said they were doing it for the sake of keeping Andhra Pradesh united, claiming that they were taking inspiration from Potti Sriramulu, who sat on a fast-unto-death. Potti Sriramulu died after fasting for 58 days. As blood pressure levels dropped, doctors were called out to conduct tests.

An ambulance was kept on stand-by, just in case some urgent medical help is required for the fasting leaders. Seemandhra Congress leaders also visited the TDP MPs, saying that since they are on fast for keeping Andhra Pradesh united, they decided to meet them. The Seemandhra Congress leaders, who met the TDP MPs, included Vundavalli Arun Kumar, L Rajagopal, K V P Ramachander Rao, Sai Pratap, K Bapi Raju, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao and Ananta Venkatram Reddy, besides Union Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao.
