Child Labourers, Victims Of Circumstance. Md. Abdul Kaseem was a young boy who took the burden of his family on his shoulders, when his elder brother left home after his marriage, to feed his parents and to educate his younger sister and brother.

A child is special compared to an adult human being. An average child laughs about a hundred times more than an adult. But the saddest part is that we are coming to realize that these beautiful smiles of childhood are now facing a peril. Socrates said: “Wonder is a gateway to wisdom.”

The question arises as to how do we define a child? And what is childhood? The answers to both the questions are a little diplomatic, but the sweet and simple answer is that ‘Childhood’ is that period of life, which is full of smiles and wonders.

Md. Abdul Kaseem was a young boy who took the burden of his family on his shoulders, when his elder brother left home after his marriage, to feed his parents and to educate his younger sister and brother.

But he never missed being the topper of his class till he reached Class VI. After that he started working. Since starting work, he earned Rs 220 a day, working in hazardous conditions just to feed himself and his family and to get his siblings educated.

"If I don't work, who will feed my family? The Government gave us free and compulsory education till 14 years. What comes after?" he asks. Now whom shall we blame? The government or our constant state of poverty? Or the society which encouraged him to work?

We have since our Independence, passed many laws legislating child education and development. But are they being implemented seriously? If yes, we would have definitely achieved something better than this.
This is not only Abdul's story, but a number of children like Abdul who are still being forced to work. Only a few are identified in the census surveys, a majority of Abduls who are still invisible to the eye, working in perilous conditions and many more who are going to face unsafe life situations and problems.
The government should look into another facet of this problem, which is to eradicate child labor completely. Every child should be educated because ''the future of our nation lies within the walls of our class rooms."
