Run For Unity: A fitting Tribute To Sardar Patel. The event date marks his 63rd death anniversary.
What is cited to be the only event of its kind ever organized in the Indian history, ‘Run for Unity’, a record breaking marathon will witness more than 40 lakh people running concurrently from over 1000 locations across 29 states and 6 Union Territories in the country.
Set to be inaugurated by the Bhartiya Janta Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on December 15 in Vadodara, the run will unite the country in offering tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister and deputy Prime Minister of India, who played foremost role in integrating 565 princely states with independent India. The event date marks his 63rd death anniversary.
The historic run that is spread over 2-km route will be flagged off by the Gujarat chief minister at 8 am on Sunday in the presence of distinguished citizens of the city including Arjuna and Eklavya Awardees.
The ‘Run for Unity’ is stated to be the largest mass walk of its kind and all the participants will wear a common unity scarf to mark their attendance in the unmatched event. The race is primarily divided into two main categories namely ‘The Unity Run’ for anybody over the age of 12 and ‘The Unity March’ that is designed especially for the families or senior citizens. The participants will receive exclusive SOU merchandise and souvenirs. They will also be awarded with a certificate of participation.

Several other senior leaders from the BJP will pilot the event in different locations of the country. Lal Krishna Advani will lead the gathering in Gujarat, Sushma Swaraj in Bhopal and Rajnath Singh in Uttarakhand.
The entire event is mainly conceptualized by the Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), which is the National Movement Partner of Statue of Unity along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET).
The ‘Run for Unity’ is a curtain raiser to the ‘Statue of Unity’ movement, an initiative of the Gujarat government to offer tribute to Sardar Patel by erecting the world’s tallest statue (182m) in his honor.
