Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who had quit the Karnataka BJP to launch his own party just over a year ago, will be going back to his parent party formally on Thursday.

Yeddyurappa, the founder of the Karnatka Janata Party, will go to the BJP office to enlist as a primary member, along with many of his close aides and colleagues from the KJP. Though he had announced a merger with the BJP last week and had given a letter to the Speaker about the two parties merging, he will formalise it by taking membership on Thursday.

The critical merger comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in an effort to consolidate the anti-Congress sentiment in Karnataka, the only southern state where BJP has some significant presence.

After he had floated his own party before the 2013 assembly elections of Karnataka, the majority Lingayat caste leader had managed to get as much as a 10 per cent vote share, with six MLAs in the assembly just five months after his party was born.

In an interview last week, Yeddyurappa had said that since he has all along been supporting Narendra Modi's candidature for prime ministership, he felt he could strengthen the party by merging. There is also preliminary talk that Yeddyurappa himself could be contesting the Lok Sabha elections, despite the corruption tag he has been painted with over the past three years.
