Often it becomes a matter of quandary whether a person whose life cannot be saved can endure mercy killing or not. There has been an endless debate on this issue. Now, the issue has come in the Supreme Court’s ground. Common Cause, an NGO has filed a petition to consider the option of mercy killing, if it is opted by the kith and kin of the family members upon the judgment of the doctors that the life of the person cannot be saved. The apex court has decided to carry out an in-depth study of the issue.
The legal bench headed by R.M. Lodha, the Chief Justice, along with the other judges – J.S. Khehar, J. Chalameshwar, S.K. Sikri and R.F. Nariman has decided to put forward the issue before the Law Commission of India. A decision has been made to get suggestions from experts, people and other stakeholders. A recommendation would be made accordingly.
