Around 44 nurses from Kerala who were working in various hospitals across strife-torn Libya returned home on Tuesday morning. This was a part of evacuation efforts initiated by the Indian government.

The nurses who arrived from Tunisia to Dubai in bus boarded an Emirates flight which brought them back to India. It was at the behest of Kerala CM Oomen Chandy that External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj arranged for a flight to ensure safe return of the Indian nurses.

Fighting between rival militias in Tripoli over the past three weeks and clashes between Islamists and army in the eastern city of Benghazi have prompted several countries to evacuate their nationals and diplomatic staff.

Last month, 46 nurses, who were held captive by ISIS militants in Iraq, returned home by a special Air India Flight here bringing an end to their about month-long trauma.
