Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned India\'s largest indigenously built warship INS Kolkata at the Naval Dockyard. The 6,800-tonne destroyer INS Kolkata was designed by the Indian Navy\'s design bureau and constructed by the Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) Built under the ambitious Project 15-Alpha and fitted with the most advanced weapons systems, including anti-submarine technology, INS Kolkata is the largest stealth destroyer constructed by the MDL.

Built under the ambitious Project 15-Alpha and fitted with the most advanced weapons systems, including anti-submarine technology, INS Kolkata is the largest stealth destroyer constructed by the MDL.
The ship named as 'The City of Joy' Kolkata, has prominent features that include length of 163 m and width of 17.4 m, with a displacement of 7,500 tonnes and 2 helicopters on board.
Most of the weapons and sensors are homegrown which include the high-tech BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, rocket launchers, torpedo tube launchers, sonar Humsa, EWS Ellora and AK-630 guns, giving it a defence capability to counter threats of enemy sea and air attacks.
It is the first of three ships planned in this class - the other two being INS Kochi and INS Chennai. The Rs 11,662 crore Project-15A, is running several years behind schedule. There was plan to launch Project-15B to build four guided missile stealth destroyers, after the completion of these three warships.
Prime minister said INS Kolkata is the prime example of India's technical abilities and congratulated everyone associated with the project Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan were present at the ceremony.
