New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday declared that the NDA government will not stop UPA's flagship programme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) and that it is a living example of the monument of the previous government's failures. Replying to the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in Lok Sabha, Modi said he had political sense and on the basis of that his government will not stop MNREGA. The programme can be shown to the world as a living example of the monument of the failures of the UPA government, he said.
"I have a good political sense and it says never stop MNREGA. My mindset says MNREGA is an evidence of failure of the previous government. MNREGA will stay. My political instinct says don't end MNREGA. I will never make that mistake. MNREGA will stay but yes we will add value to it so that they can benefit the poor," he said.
Speaking on the charges made by the Congress that NDA government was taking old policies but changing their names, Modi said the issue is not about the policy or the name of the policy but the issue is the problem. "We are trying to find a solution to the problems we have inherited," he said. The UPA talked about Nirmal Bharat while the NDA brought Swacch Bharat. "Name is not the issue, the problem is the issue. Swacchta is an issue and it is related to our mindset," Modi said.
He took a dig at Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for criticizing him for going to Varanasi for cleanliness of Assi Ghat. "I was wondering if he was giving the report card of the Uttar Pradesh government," he said. Modi said the political parties must rise above naming of project. "Governments come and go. Governments do not make a country. It is the people who build the country," he said.
