New Delhi: Usually fractious Opposition parties on Tuesday joined forces for a march against a Bill to ease land acquisition rules, a rare show of unity that bodes badly for a key part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic overhaul plans. In the first display of Opposition unity against the NDA government, over 100 MPs from 14 political parties, led by Sonia Gandhi, marched from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday against amendments to the Land Acquisition Act and pledged to continue their “do or die” battle.

A delegation of 26 leaders, including former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and H D Deve Gowda, met President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him to protect the farmers’ interests by impressing upon the Modi government “not to go ahead with the amendments in the Rajya Sabha” saying they were aimed at promoting “divisions and social disharmony”.

MPs and leaders from around 14 political parties, including Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, CPI and CPI (M), participated in the protest march amid heavy security. The Congress and other Opposition parties have been opposing the Land Acquisition Bill terming it as anti-farmer and pro-corporate.
