Hyderabad: The Union government is examining the possibility of re-promulgating the ordinance on the Land Acquisition Bill if it failed to get the assent of Parliament. This was indicated by Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu at a press conference here on Monday. Naidu made this comment when asked about the options before the government if it failed to get the Bill passed before April 6 when it would lapse. The Union minister recalled that Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad himself had stated that the government could re-promulgate the ordinance.

At the same time, Venkaiah Naidu appealed to all parties to debate the issue and come up with constructive suggestions as the government had an open mind. He appealed to all parties not to blindly oppose the bill. Replying to another question, the minister said the bill was pro-poor and pro-farmer. He said Revenue Ministers from all the states and Union Territories were invited and extensive deliberations were held on the issue and 28 states had supported the changes in the Land Acquisition Act. “Need for speed is the mantra of development to trigger the sluggish economy” he added.

Venkaiah Naidu claimed that the compensation amount to be paid to farmers would go up by four times higher than the market value of land. There is no reduction in compensation to farmers, he said. He said that with four lakh crore worth projects critical to employment generation, rural infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial growth getting mired in litigation for various clauses, the NDA government brought the ordinance.
