Srinagar: Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh on Saturday paid tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives defending the country's frontiers during the 1999 Kargil war. General Dalbir Singh laid a wreath at the Drass war memorial in Kargil district on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

He was accompanied by Lieutenant General D S Hooda, chief of the Northern Command, and Lieutenant General S K Patyal, commander of Fire and Fury Corps. The families of the Kargil war martyrs were special invitees to the event. In his brief speech to officers, soldiers and ex-servicemen at the war memorial, General Dalbir Singh said: "I am overwhelmed by the sacrifice of our martyrs and the presence of their families here today. "I have served in these areas and I know how tough it is for a soldier to discharge duties and protect the borders of the country in such a difficult terrain."
