Twelve people were killed and about one thousand and fifty were injured in cast-related riots that broke out in Haryana State where thousands of soldiers were sent given shoot on sight orders, Haryana additional chief secretary P.K Das said.

This crisis turned violent after being in the making for days. Rural Jat caste originally called for a greater access to government jobs. They demand quotas to be set for Jats for highly sought-after government jobs and for university places. Cast members say they are struggling to find places despite India's strong economic growth.

Haryana BJP leader Anil Jain said the state government had now agreed to the community’s demands. “We have decided in the meeting that Jats will be given reservation through a law in the next assembly session,” Jain said after the talks.

“Water to be equally rationed amongst all. Pl save water. Schools closed tomo,” Kejriwal said on Twitter.

Houses and train stations were burnt, highways were blocked, and water infrastructures were destroyed in Haryana state. The riot also hit Delhi's water supply as the protesters closed the canal valves feeding the capital.

Delhi’s chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, announced water rationing throughout the city, and said all schools would be closed on Monday to conserve supplies. New Delhi gets about 60% of its water from the neighbouring state.

Similar caste-related protests hit Gujarat State in August 2015, leaving several dead. The Patel caste demanded same treatment afforded to lower castes.
