In order to preserve and promote Indian cultural music, THE NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY organized a stage performance by the renowned Rajasthani folk artist Ustad Rehmat Khan Langa under the banner of Spic Macay (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth). Music has the capacity to mesmerize, heal and transport one to a world of its own.

In order to preserve and promote Indian cultural music, THE NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY organized a stage performance by the renowned Rajasthani folk artist Ustad Rehmat Khan Langa under the banner of Spic Macay (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth). Music has the capacity to mesmerize, heal and transport one to a world of its own. The faculty, students and everyone else present were enthralled by the enchanting performance of Ustad Rehmat Khan Langa. Ustad Rehmat Khan sang the song “Haanji re Banni Tu” which has become the anthem of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. He also sang “JalaloBilalo”, “Nimuda Nimuda”, and many other songs.

Ustad Rehmat Khan, recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in Secularism, he has performed widely in India and abroad and presently teaches folk music at National Bal Bhawan, New Delhi. Ustad Rehmat Khan said that most of the movie songs have been adopted or inspired by folk songs. He was accompanied by his troop members, Anwar Khan, Farooq Khan, Ala Baksha, Rafique, Isha Khan and Shyam Lal. The troop presented different heart-touching and popular folk songs, bhajans and some bollywood numbers. Ustad Rehmat Khan said that most of the movie songs have been adopted or inspired by folk songs from different regions of India.

Pooja, student of The NorthCap University said, “It is the first time I have seen a live performance of a folk song, earlier I had only watched it on television. It was a great experience and I feel that these type of performances preserve and respect our culture, therefore, are very necessary. We are thankful to Ustad Rehmat Khan Langa ji and his troop members for giving us such a mesmerizing experience.

Through the performance and interaction with renowned artists, students were privileged to understand and appreciate some of the intricacies of our folk songs. The students were enthralled by the beauty of folk music and were to the beats. The experience was a memorable one as the students thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it while gaining an insight to the cultural traditions of India.

Speaking on the occasion, the coordinator at NCU, Mrs Kunna Madhurkar said, “SPIC MACAY provides a platform to promote classical music and dance. It is very important to know and respect our culture. We are thankful to the artists who have performed.”
