Kolkata: The Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested Ranjit Bhattacharya, the associate vice-president of Hyderabad-based construction company IVRCL, in connection with the collapse of Vivekananda flyover last week killing 26 people and injuring around 89 others.

As many as eight officers of the IVRCL have been arrested under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

Investigators earlier arrested Project Manager Tanmoy Sil and conducted a thorough search of IVRCL's Beadon Street office and seized several documents.

The city offices of the company were sealed following the tragedy.

The flyover, located in the congested marketplace of Burrabazar in North Kolkata, partially collapsed on March 31.

The police slapped murder charges against the arrested IVRCL officials after the incident.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier assured all possible support to the people.

The state government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. five lakh to next of kin of the victims and Rs. two lakh to gravely injured people.
